Director’s Statement
My dad’s mom is not my grandmother.
She loves her son, my dad, but she never liked my mom, and I’m the bloom of their love. She is very religious, I’m not. She spends all the money she earns, I save. I prioritize education, she hosts tons of parties.
We are birds from totally different nests.
Still, I never abandoned her. I go to all of her events and thoughtfully gift her every Christmas. But I never got a birthday call from her. Neither a hug. She abandoned me even before I was born.
Madam Lou and Alice are a combination of my dad’s mom and I. Probably, the closest we will ever be. I want both of them to have a reason to be apart and a need to be with each other.
I wasn’t given the opportunity to love my grandma, but I want Alice to have a chance.
We are birds from totally different nests. yet, family
She is Alice
Alice represents a new phenomenon among the new generation known as "The Conservative Youth." At 22, she was born and raised in a strict Catholic environment, becoming even more devout after the loss of her mother, who had been her sole source of support.
Despite her strong personality, Alice struggles with feelings of abandonment and a deep longing for familial connections.
When she encounters her grandma, Madam Lou, who embodies an extremely liberal lifestyle, Alice finds herself torn between her ingrained beliefs, the disdain for a different world, and the possibility of family connection.
She is Madam Lou
Madam Lou, a 65-year-old Madam and neighborhood icon, has spent her life entrenched in the underground world, never knowing any better. Beneath Madam Lou's tough and confident exterior lies an empty space in her heart, shaped by the loss and the choices that drove her daughter away.
Alice’s mother could never accept Madam Lou’s choices and abandoned her when she became pregnant with Alice, unable to forgive her for the environment in which she was raised.
Alice's arrival resembles the rejection Madam Lou faced from her daughter, forcing her to relive her abandonment and consider the possibility of making a different choice this time.
